Halogen

Halogen light bulbs are also referred to as halogen lamps, tungsten-halogen lamp, the quartz-halogen lamp or the quartz-iodine lamp. In a halogen bulb a tungsten filament is sealed into a small envelope filled with a halogen gas such as iodine or bromine. Halogen lamps run at higher temperatures than ordinary incandescent lamps, allowing for higher luminous efficancy, apparent brightness, and produce a whiter color light.

Because the lamp / bulb gets very hot, the halogen lamp's envelope is made of hard glass or fused quartz, instead of ordinary soft glass.

Halogen bulbs are widely used in automobile headlamps, desk lamps, reading lamps, kitchen lighting and torch style floor lamps etc.

Using special bulb materials, the lamp becomes a source of UV-B light. Halogen lamps are used in some scientific, medical and dental instruments as a UV-B light source.

A standard halogen lamp is designed to run about 2000 hours, twice as long as a typical ordinary incandescent lamp.
